American bully
American Bully is
a breed of companion dog, of standard size, molossus type, of North American
origin. in the United States, and by Alianz Canine and the CRCPE (Conservation
of pure dog breeds in Spain), in Spain, both entities officially recognized by
the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Environment of Spain.
It is a
relatively young breed (1980) although its development and recognition of this
was not until 1990. According to UKC, the breed has been obtained by crossing
the American Staffordshire Terrier (Amstaff), Staffordshire bull terrier, Pit
bull (from the UKC), English Bulldog, Olde english bulldogge, American Bulldog
and French Bulldog. However, there are controversies regarding Pit bull
involvement as the UKC agrees to register Amstaffs as pit bull terriers, and
the UKC dogs used in the crosses were from Amstaff lines. The ABKC (American
Bully Kennel Club), for example, highlights the great similarity between the
bully and the Amstaff, pointing to physical appearance as the only difference.2
Its breeders took
special care to get a dog that was an excellent family companion, carefully
selecting the most desirable attributes of the American Stafforshire Terrier,
with the noble and calm temperament of the bulldog, which has resulted in a
loyal and delicate temperament pet, although physically (despite its robust
appearance) it leaves much to be desired because it does not perform any job
function as a dog.
Description
It is a fairly
tame dog and was not created for any job function, they are usually very
muscular, with a powerful head, short back. It is a compact and somewhat
intimidating dog at first sight, but with a good character, especially with
children, which makes this dog its best and most outstanding feature.
Varieties
The ABKC (American
Bully Kennel Club) recognizes four varieties of American Bully, the other
cinephile entities are limited to accepting only the standard and classic
varieties.
History and
origin
The American
Bully as a breed arose from the desire to have a companion dog that was totally
docile with both people and animals, but that had a strong and heavy appearance
with a differentiated head.
In the 1990s
David Wilson, who was previously an admirer of pit bulls, became interested in
dogs of the American Staffordshire Terrier (Amstaff) breed and at this time
began his creation of Amstaffs using the Blue maxx dog, the bitch Silver Sadey
of ML, the dog Throwin Knuckles] and the dog Jackson's Mr. Brooks - all with
several champions of the American Kennel Club in their pedigree - managing to
develop a lineage of robust dogs with bulky heads, which was known by the name
of its Razor Edge hatchery.
In the mid-1990s
until the early 2000s, the lineage was noticed for its blue nose, robust,
compact physique with a large head, and its intimidating appearance, and these
dogs later received the nickname of "bully style".
At the same time,
two other similar lineages emerged presenting the same concept, and which had
equal importance for the American Bully: the Gotti (or Gottiline) lineage based
on the Notorious dog Juan Gotty that produced more than 900 children; and the
Greyline lineage based on the dog Tony's Showtime.
The "bully
movement" or "bully style" - which also occurred in other breeds
such as the American Bulldog and the Olde English Bulldogge - became quite
popular and various aspects emerged within the concept that using the cited
lineages along with excessive achievement from blood matings and the insertion
of bulldog breeds, dogs with quite exotic and robust physical characteristics
originated.
With this
insertion of other breeds - based on credible accounts, the insertion of
English bulldog, French bulldog, American bulldog, dogue de bordaux and even
types of mastiffs is suspected - the morphological selection finally gave rise
to the American Bully breed and its own various varieties, including official
varieties: standard, classic, pocket and XL; differing in size and weight.
Among these varieties only the "Standard" is recognized by the United
Kennel Club. In addition to these, there are also unofficial varieties.
In 2003, the
Bully Kennel Club (BKC) was founded as its own breed registration club. And in
2004 the American Bully Kennel Club (ABKC), now known as the breed's largest
club, was founded. In 2013 the American Bully was finally recognized by the
United Kennel Club as the second largest international club in the United
States.
