Poodle
The poodle (in English, poodle) is a breed of dog that until the 15th century was considered the exclusive use of aristocrats and nobles. It was a water retriever until the Renaissance: they recovered the hunted prey that had fallen into the water, such as ducks and swans. Today they are frequently found in dog shows. There are four varieties: large, medium, dwarf and toy. Apart from the common poodle, there is also the Cordelé variety.

Reproduction
The appearance of heat in the bitch varies between 7 and 9 months of age. In small breeds, generally earlier, it will be seen earlier than in large breeds. However, no bitch should be concerned that he did not show up when he is one year old, as there are other complex factors, apart from age, that influence this. If a female has not had her first heat, after a year and a half of life we should take her to the vet for review.

The duration of a heat lasts between 15 and 20 days and even 25 days. The dog undergoes changes in behavior, growth and vaginal bleeding that varies greatly in quantity according to each animal.

The gestation period lasts approximately between 61 and 63 days. It is convenient that after 63 days, if the bitch has not yet calved, daily veterinary checks are performed, as well as fetal vitality checks by means of a Doppler ultrasound on the puppies to avoid fetal mortality. A poodle can have a number of young of 4 to 10 cubs, respectively.

Cuts
There are many types of cuts, but those admitted for exhibition are: Continental, American Continental, Scandinavian and Puppy Clip or Puppy. The cut will be based on the structure of the dog and the taste of the exhibitor or owner, the most used is the American Continental for exhibitions, while the Puppy Clip is for pets that do not expose due to its easy maintenance.

Apart from the common poodle, there is also the Cordelé variety, having this hair more curly and in the form of ropes or dreadlocks, similar to the fur of the puli or komondor breed. The Cordelé variety is rare, as the coat is difficult to clean and takes a long time to dry after washing. However, it can be displayed at AKC dog shows.

Whatever the dog's cut, it needs frequent brushing because its coat is very prone to knots.

This small long curly haired dog is one of the most famous dog breeds. A regular at beauty pageants, the poodle is active and alert.

Poodle History
The name of poodle derives from the word canard which has the meaning of "duck". It is a descendant of the old Barbet, a Gallic water dog that was imported by Spain and Portugal from North Africa to France in the 8th century, where the origin of this breed was established. In the Middle Ages and up to the Renaissance, the agility of its breed meant that it hunted swimming birds such as ducks, swans or geese. They are known as water dogs because they are waterproof and adapt very well to muddy terrain.

His intelligence and skill would make him, from the 16th century, the protagonist of circus numbers. Able to perform tricks and other juggling, the trained poodles captured the admiration of all onlookers. Then the breed became popular for its beauty among high society. He became an exclusive animal of the court that the nobles adorned with luxurious jewelry and ornaments. Despite the fall of the French Empire, its popularity spread throughout Europe and North America. Poodles are now known on all continents as a companion animal.

Poodle physical traits
There are four varieties of poodle. The smallest version is the toy that has a height at the withers of up to 28 cm. The dwarf ranges from 28 to 35 cm., The medium has a size of 35 to 45 cm., While the large can reach 55 cm.

The poodle stands out for its attractive curly and woolly hair. Although the most common colors of the breed are black and white, there are also browns, grays or apricot tones. His cheerful eyes give him an awakened image and although they are usually black, they can also have amber hues. Its distinguished appearance is marked by its high and upright head and an elongated neck that give it an elegant air. With a pronounced muzzle, long and hanging ears, the poodle has a prominent jaw and solid teeth.

His body is well proportioned. It is distinguished by a loin and muscular shoulders, in addition to a firm chest. Both the fore and hind limbs are straight and perfectly aligned in parallel. The poodle is a long-tailed dog, although it is usually cut in a third when they are puppies.

Poodle Behavior
Poodles stand out for their intelligence and good memory. They are very active and awake but also disciplined, so they are taught with great ease and their training is not complicated at all. Hence they are good learners for proof of work and agility. They also act as guardians of the home, barking to warn of visits.

In addition, they are affectionate, playful and loyal to their master, making them ideal pets for living with the family. His cheerful and playful attitude makes the poodle an inseparable friend for the smallest of the house. Also, they have no problem relating to other dogs or pets.

Poodle care
The abundant coat of the poodle requires daily styling, plus monthly washing and regular trimming. Within the aesthetics of poodles, the "lion cut" has become a hallmark of the breed that consists of shearing the back to the ribs and extremities, leaving intact the cuffs and the final pom pom of the tail. The poodle does not lose much hair but it is important to keep it carefully to avoid tangles.

The owner of the poodle must pay special attention to her ears and eyes. The variety of dwarf poodle is predisposed to suffer from otitis due to having a narrow ear canal and, on the other hand, to suffer a progressive degeneration of the retina that leads to loss of vision. There are two especially conflictive points in this breed that must be monitored in order to detect problems early.
