WHAT IS A LABRADOR LIKE?
Labradors are cheerful and good by nature. They are the
therapy and assistance dogs par excellence, and as a companion dog they love to
share their time doing activities with the family.
How is the Labrador retriever?
The Labrador's balanced temperament has made him the
favorite dog of families around the world and with his work in society, as a
therapy, assistance or rescue dog; he has won the heart of the entire planet.
Due to its great qualities, we should not be surprised to know that the
Labrador retriever is the most popular breed globally. The Labrador retriever
is a great fun lover. For him, every day deserves to be lived to the fullest
and his vitality is contagious. In addition, they have great capacity to be trained,
so they are the ideal company to make him the dog we have always wanted.
THE CHARACTER OF THE RETRIEVER LABRADOR
It is a very sociable breed, and that makes it a great
companion for other dogs and children. Always eager to have our attention, the Labrador
retriever will become a patient dog who will greatly appreciate any show of
affection we provide. They are very enthusiastic dogs and for them there is
nothing more special than a person who welcomes you with open arms to whom they
will give all their kisses. Also in case a tense situation is created with
another dog, the Labradors are peaceful by nature and usually avoid any
problems. They are dogs that transmit positivity, it is their way of being, and
anyone who has had a Labrador will have learned from him that you can always
see the glass half full.
A LABRADOR IN THE FAMILY
Any family can enjoy the endearing character of a Labrador.
Many people think that being a large dog they need a large house with a garden
so that the dog can have a good quality of life, but it does not have to be
this way.
The Labrador retriever loves to run and play, it is
something that he loves, but it does not matter how big the house is because he
will learn that whenever he is at home he must remain calm. It will be during
walks taking him to the park when he can play, for example, ball or with other
dogs. Obviously, if we have a garden we can give it a game without going
outside, but that should not replace the walk that is essential for any dog.
But we insist that the size of the house is not important, because inside it
you will want to rest and for that a comfortable corner to rest is enough.
THE LABRADOR
OUTSIDE THE HOUSE
As a rule, a
Labrador requires 3 daily walks, although when he is more adult, some Labradors
are enough with 2 walks. This is an important time to bond with him, allow him
to explore new places and smells, to release energy, and to socialize with
other dogs, people, and noises.
The Labrador is a
great dog for those who have an active life, because he will always be happy to
accompany his family wherever he goes and will know how to do it to enjoy the
moment.
It is a dog that
never seems to tire, it will always be prepared to go for the ball, play with
the children, take a long trail up the mountain, bathe in the sea or accompany
its owner to run. Likewise, he loves to share quiet moments with his family
accompanying them while they watch television, study or nap. For the Labrador
Retriever the most important thing is always the company of his family.
THE LABRADOR'S
NEEDS
The labrador is a
very intelligent dog and his capacity to be trained is enormous since he is
always looking to please. With very few repetitions, you can quickly learn what
to expect from him, and as he learns, his ability to understand new commands is
further accelerated. For this reason, one of the needs of the Labrador
Retriever is training to develop its intellectual capacities and keep its
hard-working mind balanced. Teach him tricks, challenge him to get his food,
propose new situations and games ... He will always be happy to show that he
can do anything.
Regarding
veterinary health, it is important to pay attention to his bones, since being a
fast growing dog we must ensure that we provide him with a good diet during his
development, be careful that the dog does not make too sudden movements and
support nutrition with a veterinary chondroprotector that strengthens the
joints.
And at the
hairdressing level, the care is very simple. You should brush your hair to
prevent it from falling out and take regular baths to hydrate your skin. He
makes the move twice a year, and at that time it is ideal to go to the
hairdresser to have a skinning done to avoid the discomfort of hair loss and
relieve the heat of the dog. The good thing is that since Labradors love water,
they will have no problems when bathing.

Labrador
retrievers are sturdy and compact dogs. Its appearance is practically square,
with a strong body and robust legs. The maximum height for a male is 60 cm,
which places them in the category of medium-sized dogs, although due to their
robust constitution they appear much larger. Weight ranges from 38 kg in a
large male to 25 kg in a smaller female. Dogs bred for the field line are
usually taller and somewhat leaner in build.
Labradors are
easily recognized by their broad heads, drooping ears, and large, expressive
eyes. Two characteristics of the labrador are its double layer of thick but
rather short hair, very resistant to water, and the well-known "otter
tail". The tail is thick and robust and comes out of the almost straight
top line. The feet are described as having an "interdigital membrane"
as they have a longer skin between the toes that helps them swim. Color can
range from black through chocolate to red / yellow and even almost white.
The Labrador
Retriever is a breed that matures at a moderately fast rate, reaching its adult
height between six and twelve months of age, although it can continue to gain
weight until two years of life. Many reach 12 or 14 years of age.
Personality
Labrador
Retrievers are generally great family dogs as long as you keep in mind that
they need to exercise and receive training. They are dogs bred for work and
they work hard, and they love being assigned tasks, especially rescue.
Labradors often
get along well with other dogs, other pets, and children, provided the training
has lessened their natural exuberance. They are strong dogs and need some
obedience training from a very young age to prevent them from dragging their
owners down the street when they feel like it.
Given their
energetic nature, those left alone or not exercising enough can adopt
destructive behaviors by biting, digging, and barking excessively.
Many Labradors
are especially energetic dogs, while others are "flat" completely
from a very young age. Nibbling can be a problem, because they have an oral
fixation as a result of their strong rescue instinct, so it is helpful to have
toys for biting, training and exercise.
Coexistence
Obviously,
Labradors have multiple adorable traits that make them very popular. They are
smart and easy enough to train, in part because of their desire to work with
people. They are good eaters and can be overweight if they don't exercise and
their food portions aren't adjusted as needed. Labradors are excellent family
dogs because they love company, so they feel sad when they are in kennels or
remote areas.
Labradors tend to
be protective of their families and homes, although they also often welcome
visitors. They can also end up being teethers and destroyers if they don't get
the right toys and guidance. Labradors can nibble on people, and the solution
is often just to give them a toy that they can take with them to keep their
mouths full. They are very strong dogs and an early training is necessary to
get a dog that walks pleasantly on a leash.
The wonderful
double coat of fur that keeps the Labrador warm when working in icy waters also
makes this breed the queen of molts. Normally a quick cleaning per week is
sufficient, but in the molting season a daily cleaning is necessary. The amount
of exercise they need varies according to their utility: Field dogs can run all
day, while show dogs only need moderate exercise.
History
At the beginning
of the 19th century, some "multi-function" dogs used in North America
(mainly in Canada) by hunters were sent to England. Many of these water dogs
were of the Newfoundland type, but the smaller ones used to be designated as
St. John's dogs. In England, the breed developed and improved (probably with
contributions from smooth-haired retrievers) to become the breed we recognize
today.
As specified by
name (retriever means ‘retriever’ or ‘rescuer’), Labrador retrievers were
raised and selected for their remarkable rescue capabilities, especially in the
water. They have worked as fellow duck hunters in all kinds of conditions and
climates. His intelligence and desire to work as a companion to man has earned
him many other tasks. Today, Labradors excel as support dogs and guide dogs,
family pets, trail dogs for the military, customs and special body dogs for
arson, search and rescue dogs, as well as companions for hunting and working
dogs. .
The good
character of this breed has catapulted it to number one on the American
popularity charts, a position it claims to retain. Despite their fame as indoor
pets, they are also found outside of homes. It must always be remembered that
Labradors are water dogs by nature, and from a very young age puppies show a
strong desire to carry things and a strong attraction for water, even in
puddles.
